Twitter has certainly been in the news lately. The original claim by Congressman Weiner that his Twitter account had been hacked caused Twitter to issue some tips about how to keep an Internet account safe. Some of these include:
strong passwords including numbers and symbols
use of unique passwords for each website used
being aware of suspicious links
don't give out usernames or passwords
have updated anti-virus software protection
Other technology tips from Cecilia Kang include being aware of Phishing attacks, Malware and one new to me. Kang suggests that unsecure Wi-Fi networks, while nice to log on to at your public library or coffee shot hot spot, might permit hackers on the same network to get into your online accounts through your browser.
So the moral to the story is to create strong passwords, be careful---look before you click send, and be wise about public wi-fi spots.
An additional note on Twitter--this month Twitter announced a "Follow" button for web sites. You'll begin to see this button on web sites so it is now even easier to follow the financial news at CNNmoney or moneywatch, the news at the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Fox News or CBS News, the sports with Sports Illustrated or even entertainment with TV Guide.
